Little known fact, the reason we have incubators for babies is because of a side show showman. While they were becoming popular in Europe, in the United States preemie babies were sent home in a shoe box and told to keep the baby near the pot belly stove for warmth.
A Coney Island showman brought incubators from Europe and gave free healthcare to women with preemie babies. Charging 25 cents for people to look at small babies.
The medical establishment was embarrassed, event though they did not want the added extra expense of specialized nurses, they started to use incubators
here in the United States. Eventually, they became so common place that they were no longer a novelty and no longer used in the side show.
